The Dusky Goose Vineyards
Rambouillet Vineyard, owned by John and Linda Carter, is ideally located in the Dundee Hills, Oregon’s premier grape growing AVA (American Viticulture Area).
The vineyard features 100% Jory soil (volcanic origin, clay-loam soil), optimal elevations for ripening fruit at approximately 250 to 500 feet, direct south facing exposures and plant orientation to maximize seasonal daylight, cool coastal climate, and specifically selected Pinot noir clones suited best for our location and winemaker’s style, resulting in a Pinot noir that is seductively elegant with defining depth and character.
Rambouillet Vineyard is farmed with the sensibilities of low-impact farming, a commitment to low-yields, limited production, and no compromises to the integrity of the fruit, vines or the land. This no-compromises approach to growing superior quality Pinot noir fruit allows us to produce a distinctive Pinot noir in the bottle.
Lillie’s Vineyard is a select site leased by the Carters from vineyard owners Tom and Kaye Edwards. Lillie’s Vineyard is located adjacent to Rambouillet Vineyard. Lillie’s Vineyard was planted in 2001, features similar south facing slopes, but its orientation is south by southwest. It also includes optimal elevations of approximately 300 to 500 feet, Jory soil, and is planted exclusively with the Dijon clone 115. The property was purchased by the Edwards in 1996 from George Fox College, who had received the property as a gift from one if its professors. A portion of the property is left uncultivated as an ecological reserve that hosts owls, bats, bobcats, deer, and other flora and fauna. Both Rambouillet and Lillie’s Vineyard are two of few vineyards without deer fencing in the area; we suspect that the bobcats make it uncomfortable for deer to loiter in the open vineyards. The bats help keep the insect population in balance, and several different raptor species are commonly patrolling the properties, discouraging small bird damage, and reducing the ground squirrel population. Lillie’s Vineyard is farmed by Andy Humphrey with the same care and sensibility as Rambouillet Vineyard.
Additionally, select blocks of 777 Clone from Ana Vineyard (Weber Vineyard) have been included in some vintages. We have also included in the Dundee Hills cuvee some exceptional Wadenswil Clone from Thistle Vineyard for several years, and prior to Lillie’s Vineyard coming on board utilized Clone 115 from Winderlea Vineyard nearby. All listed vineyards are located in the Dundee Hills AVA.
